Reliance – always fab!

After a slightly ropey week, date night was pushed to Saturday. With the impending arrival of mini-Sheppard we decided a nice meal out was in order – every dinner feels like it could be the ‘last grown up dinner’ for a while!

So we decided to go to an old favourite in Leeds – Reliance. It’s a little bit out of town, but one of those places that is always packed with people in the know. It has a lovely airy bar, with a great selection of Belgian beers and real ales – including non-alcoholic Jupiler (hooray!) Then there’s the restaurant area which has a cosy but ramshackle feel to it with a mixture of Formica tables, mismatched wooden chairs, fairy lights and an open kitchen!

The menu is seasonal and very reasonably priced (starters are around £4-5, mains £8-12). There’s usually favourites such as beer battered fish ‘n’ chips, sausage & mash and steak to fall back on, but the seasonal dishes shouldn’t be missed. For starters we had a really light salmon fishcake on a tomato chutney and a pumpkin & chestnut risotto (which was especially good!) For main, Tom had pork loin on a cider & thyme risotto and I had a rump steak with portobello mushrooms and twice cooked chips. I really take my hat off to a restaurant who can do a rump steak ‘medium-well’ and it still be beautifully moist & tender – yum!

Be warned, the portions are decent and so fitting in a dessert is often a struggle! However they do a mean espresso and home made biscotti, which is my favourite way to end a meal there.

The service was excellent, despite the fact there were also several big groups dining. Plus it’s a bit of a spectacle being able to keep an eye on the chefs (usually only 2 or 3) cooking up a storm in the open kitchen (and wondering how on earth they look so chilled out!)

Northumberland

We spent last weekend in Northumberland courtesy of Tom’s mum & dad who had rented a holiday cottage there. It was a gorgeous 5 star cottage called Smuggler’s Hide, booked through Coastal Retreats, which we’d seen recommended in the Guardian. It’s in the village of Beadnell, just north of Alnwick and only a short stroll from the beach.

There’s absolutely loads to do in that part of the world – and being lucky with the weather we managed to get lots of fresh air. However, the cottage also had a log fire and home comforts such as ipod speakers, plasma tv, and books & games included so we could have just as easily & happily holed up there.

Things to do:

1) Barter’s Books

It’s a famous 2nd hand bookshop in Alnwick, where you can find almost anything from modern fiction to first editions and priceless relics. It’s housed in an old station and they have kept the waiting rooms to be used as a really nice cafe where you can peruse the books next to a lovely log fire.

2) Alnwick Gardens

A beautiful garden created by the Duchess of Northumberland, full of interest even in November! There’s water features galore,  a rose garden, poison garden, bamboo forest and much more. There’s also a lovely dovecote, which I was particularly taken with watching to catch a glimpse of the beautiful birds.

3) The Treehouse Restaurant

Think Swiss Family Robinson, add some fairylights and push the style and food quality up to max. It’s an amazing place! The atmosphere is fantastic inside as trees grow through the restaurant and the tables & chairs are ornately fashioned from beautiful wood. The food is 5 star, all locally sourced and seasonal and between the 4 of us we didn’t have a single complaint. I had a delicious trio of seafood, followed by guinea fowl and finished off with a sticky toffee and orange pudding. Suffice to say I was stuffed, but very happy! It’s on the expensive end of the spectrum, but good value for such a unique experience.

4) The coastline

The coastline is quite rugged with crashing waves, sand dunes and views across to Lindesfarne and up to Bamburgh castle. You can walk (or run as the men did) a good distance up & down the coast when the tide is out. You can definitely feel the sea air doing you some good!

Betty’s Harrogate

It was another beautiful autumn day today and we decided to go for a stroll around Harrogate. We had a lovely walk through the stray and the town centre before ending up at Betty’s for an afternoon treat!

The Montpelier cafe is a lovely room with floor to ceiling windows letting in loads of light. There’s a good choice of tea & cake and the staff were, as usual, professional & smartly dressed. I had a lovely china rose petal tea and a heart shaped fruit patisserie, which was so light and delicious. Tom enjoyed a proper hot chocolate, made from chocolate syrup which was really rich but not sickly.

It’s not cheap (£10 for 2 drinks & 1 cake) but it is an institution – and a proper treat for a Sunday afternoon!

Pizza Express – nicer than you think..

On bonfire night we decided to avoid the crowds, and indeed the cold & drizzle in favour of satisfying my pizza craving!

We decided to try the Pizza Express branch at Clarence Dock as it always looks quite inviting when we’ve walked past. It’s definitely more ‘restauranty’ than the branch in town, as often pizza express can feel dangerously similar to pizza hut.

The menu is satisfyingly mainly pizzas. – they don’t feel the need to pad it out with pastas and burgers etc. They have, however introduced a thinner crust section to the menu which feels a bit more ‘Italian’.

The obligatory dough balls & olives were ordered as a starter, and didn’t disappoint. Hilariously we saw the manager making the waiter count the number of olives he had dished out to make sure it was standard! Only in a chain hey…..

For mains we tried the hot ‘Etna’ pizza with spicy sausage and chilli. It was really pleasingly spicy! And one with prosciutto & mushrooms, which was also good. They were both on the new thinner base, which we preferred to the normal ones. It made the pizzas seem lighter, and of course slighty bigger!

The service was pretty good for this sort of chain place – we even got offered fresh black pepper, which was a bonus. And it doesn’t break the bank for a mid-week treat.
