A mini cupcake adventure!

Isn’t Twitter great? You get to hear about things you might never have heard of & a recommendation goes a long way!

I was feeling in need of a good cupcake last week and decided to try 2 cupcakeries in one day! Greedy? I don’t think so – I had a morning & an afternoon coffee date with different friends, so I reckon it was totally justified! :-)

Sunshine Bakery, Chapel Allerton

It’s a petite bakery near the Olive Tree Restaurant, seemingly run by a cupcake masterchef! The cakes are distinctive, having swirls of flavour in a meringue style peak on top. For example, our chocolate ones had a lovely smooth type of chocolate buttercream on top which was coated with melted chocolate… Amazing. How it was light & rich without being sickly I don’t know!

There are interesting options like ‘Eton Mess’ and fruity cupcakes – but popularity seems to dictate availability. So best to get there early for the best choice!

There is one little table & 2 chairs in the window, which looks really cute & good for people spotting if you can get it!
They also offer cupcake masterclasses, where you can learn to make lovely cupcakes. What a great idea!!

Out of the Woods, Holbeck Urban Village

It’s a lovely cafe down near Templeworks and the Cross Keys pub. It’s only open mon-fri, so have often longingly looked at it on a Saturday wishing it was open! It is a cafe (and it does look nice inside) but it obviously does a good take out lunch trade for the local businesses.

I was most interested in the delightful display of cupcakes on the counter. There were 4 flavours on offer that day – black cherry, chocolate mud, chocolate & hazelnut and carrot cake. I decided to get one of each to share with my antenatal buddies. I have to say, they were all excellent ( we did a little taste test!) and the favourite was the ‘mud’ – chocolately fudgey gooey and good!

They also do a good sandwich and fresh juices & smoothies, and the staff were keen to make recommendations. Definitely worth the slight detour out of the city centre!

Lakeside Cafe, Roundhay

Now the weather is improving Roundhay Park is becoming a favourite place for walks (especially amongst us ladies with babies!) And what walk is complete without a coffee, preferably with a good slice of home made cake!

I have been mightily impressed with the Lakeside cafe in Roundhay. It has a lot of things going for it:

* lovely views over the lake
* comfy sofas available
* outdoor decking area (roll on those warmer days!)
* a very smooth latte – loving the hazelnut version
* a very decent cake selection. Usually a good 6 or 7 different ‘proper’ cakes. E.g chocolate fudge, lemon drizzle, victoria sponge – but also ones like passionfruit and my favourite blueberry with cream cheese frosting (see photo!)
* very accessible for those on wheels – including a ‘pram park’ area just inside the main doors & good baby change facilities to boot.

Well done Roundhay, it’s well worth a visit!
