I thought I’d share a picture of my most recent craft project, which I had to keep under wraps until this weekend. It was my friend Vicky’s daughter’s first birthday, and I had decided to buy her a tea set so the babies could follow in our footsteps of enjoying tea and cake! However, the crucial element to this idea was having the cake too…… and how better to create it than using felt!
Strangely enough I had been inspired by a piece of crocheted battenberg I had bought from the pannier market in the summer. I set about trying to recreate it using yellow and pink felt, and stuffing it with toy stuffing. It only took about an hour and I was pleased that the finished item was recognisable!
Next I had a good search on Folksy for ideas, and came across a wealth of ‘fake food’ that clever folk had sewn. I liked the idea of a gingerbread man, like the ones made by Pipinopolis and had a go at drawing one. It was quite a tricky shape to sew and turn inside out and it ended up slightly out of scale with the battenberg… but not bad for a first attempt.
Sadly I ran out of time to make anything else in time for Holly’s birthday…. but I’m not ruling out expansion of the felt food emporium in the future.
