Salvos Salumeria

For those who don’t already know, Salvo’s Salumeria is an awesome Italian cafe and delicatessen in Headingley. It’s next door to, and little sister of Salvo’s restaurant, named ‘Best Neighbourhood Italian’ by Gordon Ramsay’s F Word. It’s such a versatile place – you can get a great coffee or lunch, attend an Italian regional evening or stock up on tasty deli and store cupboard items. They will even make you up a gift hamper, which we gave as a Christmas gift to my in-laws last year to a warm reception. My only complaint about this little gem is that it is quite little! On a busy Saturday you can struggle to get a seat, but at the moment (weather permitting) there are lots of lovely tables al fresco.

We went there for lunch on saturday and it was delightful to sit in the balmy summer air sipping on a San Pellegrino. I had a spicy penne arrabiata, which was perfectly al dente and made with proper Italian sausage (not processed pepperoni type meat). Tom had a salami & swiss cheese ‘piadine’, which is a rolled flatbread. It was fresh and filled with peppery rocket to compliment the spicy salami. We also shared some mixed olives – which are such a treat! I think there were 4 different types in the dish, including one that was bright green and quite buttery – it tasted rich like expensive olive oil.

While we were there, we were of course tempted by the deli. There are so many types of salami for starters, let alone the cheese, olives, tomatoes, bread. We had no plans for tea, so we stocked up on Italian tapas. I asked for some advice about what would go well together, and they really knew their stuff. I brought away things I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen, and we really enjoyed it! I can especially recommend the salami infused with fennel and the sun dried black olives, yummy! If you are extremely lucky you can also get your hands on some smoked buffalo mozzarella. They fly it in to Leeds Bradford once a week (can’t remember which day) and it is available in the deli the following day. You can try it in Salvo’s on the affumicata pizza, and you will be hooked!

To top it all off the service is great – friendly, chatty and good advice. They’re also building a new kitchen at the back to improve on the tiny stove they currently use (I don’t know how they do it!) and based on their day time food I’m dying to go and try one of the regional evening dinners sometime soon.

Bottega al fresco

Bottega Milanese is officially ready for the summer – iced coffees, ice creams and an outdoor seating area from which to enjoy them and do some people watching from behind your cool oversized sunglasses. There’s also the small bit of genius that involves selling ‘shotcakes’ from Sunshine Bakery, a little bit of a taste sensation in a shot glass…

Not being a big fan of the iced coffees you get from such places as Starbucks, I was keen to try a proper Italian one. I had a lovely iced mocha, which was made with nutella – great if you fancy a long cold slightly sweet drink. Tom had the iced espresso, which was amazing! It was strong and slightly sweetened by a touch of sugar, served really cold with ice cubes, not the usual mr slushy stlye you so often get.

I was also lucky enough to get my paws on a chocolate and mango shotcake. It was small and perfectly formed. I loved the presentation of it, the layers of ganache and mango mousse were very pleasing and the flavours were delicious and rich.

It’s so nice to see this business doing well and expanding. From starting out serving great Italian coffee, to now having an authentic food menu, seasonal variations and collaborating with other local businesses…. it just keeps getting better.

Portofino

I went out for dinner with the husband and a couple if friends last night. We decided to try Portofino after the good review it received from Leeds Grub and we were very impressed!

It’s right in the centre of town on Albion place, and consequently not dead close to other bars and restaurants. I’m not sure if many people know about it as it was quite quiet for a Wednesday night, and based on our experience it deserves to be busier!

The decor is a welcoming but stylish mix of deep reds and glossy black which works well in such a high ceilinged room. There was a petite bar area, which seemed well stocked and a proper coffee machine.

The menu was interesting. There were the usual pizza and pasta type offerings combined with a really great choice of meat and fish dishes (plus specials). When we asked the manager for a recommendation he proceeded to gush about the merits of all their produce! From locally sourced seasonal ingredients to proper butcher’s steaks and small label regionally sourced wines… Tricky decisions!

Between the 4 of us we had a pretty good selection of starters; garlic doughballs, baked mushrooms & goats cheese, sardines, and lobster ravioli. All were very delicious and well presented.

For mains we had garlic chicken calzone (really excellent pizza dough!), penne arrabiata, crumbed veal with spaghetti and the largest sirloin steak with hand cut chips! All complimented by a lovely Merlot (£14.50 a bottle) Portions were sizeable but we struggled through as it was sooo good!

There was just enough room to squeeze in some strong coffees & liqueurs and settle up. The bill worked out as £30 a head basically for 3 courses and plenty of booze. (Apart from me on the pineapple juice!) this seemed really reasonable for what we had, especially as we had chosen some of the more expensive dishes.

Overall we were really impressed – not only by the quality of the food, but the manager seemed an incredibly friendly and straight up guy – only too happy to have a chat & give recommendations.

We’ll definitely be going back, I just hope a few other people discover it!

La Locanda al fresco

Being on nights at the weekend and the weather being gorgeous = a good excuse to go out for lunch. Sadly Leeds is lacking restaurants with nice outdoor space, but with google to the rescue we discovered La Locanda in nearby Collingham. It is part of the Piccolino chain, so it serves up lovely Italian fayre with the bonus of a sheltered decked terrace! There are beautiful flowers all around and they pipe Italian pop classics over the outdoor speakers.

We enjoyed one of the nicest garlic breads ever, followed by mains of prawn chilli spaghetti and artisan mushroom tortalini and a fresh mixed salad.

The food was impressive, the surroundings were of the desired continental cafe culture and the price is fair for restaurant standards. We were just amazed to hear from the waiters that few people choose to enjoy their terrace! Come on people – while we have some summer sun – be a bit adventurous and enjoy a meal al fresco that isn’t a BBQ!
