Thai on the Square

Catching up with the last 2 weeks – I realised I haven’t posted about this lovely restaurant in Wakefield. We went to Thai on the Square on the recommendation of Tom’s boss about 2 weeks ago. It doesn’t look much from the outside, but is well worth venturing upstairs to find out.

The restaurant is very light and has lovely modern decor inside. Each table had a candle and a flower which was a nice touch and made it feel quite cosy. The menu included the usual suspects of starters and thai curries, however the specials board was a real treat. The list included fresh fish and seafood dishes such as prawn tom yum soup and red snapper with thai ginger. I tried both of these and was very impressed both with the presentation and the standard of the food. Tom enjoyed some chicken sesame toast, followed by tamarind duck – which was unusual and lovely. On top of that, the service was friendly and staff were happy to make recommendations.

We were very surprised to find the combination of ambience, quality and service hidden behind a fairly ordinary looking doorway. They seemed to be able to cater equally well for couples as for groups, and the place was fairly busy even on a Wednesday. Plus we felt it was good value for money. A real find in the centre of Wakefield.

La Locanda al fresco

Being on nights at the weekend and the weather being gorgeous = a good excuse to go out for lunch. Sadly Leeds is lacking restaurants with nice outdoor space, but with google to the rescue we discovered La Locanda in nearby Collingham. It is part of the Piccolino chain, so it serves up lovely Italian fayre with the bonus of a sheltered decked terrace! There are beautiful flowers all around and they pipe Italian pop classics over the outdoor speakers.

We enjoyed one of the nicest garlic breads ever, followed by mains of prawn chilli spaghetti and artisan mushroom tortalini and a fresh mixed salad.

The food was impressive, the surroundings were of the desired continental cafe culture and the price is fair for restaurant standards. We were just amazed to hear from the waiters that few people choose to enjoy their terrace! Come on people – while we have some summer sun – be a bit adventurous and enjoy a meal al fresco that isn’t a BBQ!

Burger Bargain

Excellent burger in Gourmet Burger Kitchen tonight! Went there with the husband and father-in-law and we had a cheese burger, garlic mayo burger and wild boar burger. All very tasty, cooked as you like and with nice fat chips. Even better as it was on a deal from Money Saving Expert £5.95 per burger & fries. Well recommended!
