Jamie Oliver’s Lamb Stew

This is a tasty warming sticky stew for one of those days when you need a bit of comfort food. We have made it twice this month because the weather has been so cold! It’s from the ‘Jamie’s Kitchen‘ cookbook but the recipe is available online here.

Great things about this stew:

  • It’s quite versatile because you can keep it light and serve with salad and crusty bread or you can add the traditional sunday lunch accoutrements.
  • It has hidden flavours in it that I wouldn’t particularly like individually. For example marmite and parsnips (they are grated up!)
  • It only takes about 1 1/2 hours to cook and will keep for a couple of days.
  • It has chippolatas skewered on rosemary stalks resting on top – what a great idea!
  • It’s not an expensive meal – a little lamb goes a long way

Chaophraya

Laura & Ben came to visit the other weekend and we fancied going out for an alternative Sunday lunch to the traditional roast. I had been given a recommendation that Chaophraya did a good buffet at Sunday lunch time. Also, having had a great dinner there on a previous occasion we put aside our buffet concerns of MSG laden, congealed food and gave it a go. We were pleasantly surprised!

We had booked so that we got a table big enough to bring the baby in in her car seat, and was glad we had. It was packed! Basically it’s £10 per head, plus drinks and you can ‘eat as much as you like’. There was a good choice of starters, including the usual satay chicken and prawn toast, and an aromatic soup. I think there were 8 main courses, all being refreshed and replenished regularly. These included chicken, beef, pork, mussels, tofu and vegetable – so even for the veggie amongst us there were 3 to choose from. The dishes were light and tasty, not full of the dreaded MSG as can often be the case with oriental buffets. There were even Thai pancakes (filled with jam!) and pineapple cut into heart shapes for dessert. Washed down with an appropriate ginger beer, it was very satisfyingly filling and firey (mmm chilli!)

The only thing to note is that you have to vacate your table by 2.30pm as they start taking bookings for their normal menu. We didn’t realise this and missed out on being able to dawdle over a cup of tea, but we’ll know for next time!

Christmassy Cross Keys

It’s the first post-baby blog post! Now she’s 3 weeks old we felt we could risk venturing out for a meal with her in tow. Granted we’re a bit more limited to lunchtimes for now, but there’s still plenty of options!

So today it was a festive Sunday lunch at the Cross Keys pub in Leeds. It’s a lovely cosy pub (part of the North bar group) in Holbeck urban village. It has an upmarket menu of local seasonal food and a great choice of beers. Today they even had their wood fire blazing and Christmas decorations festooned from the beams. Out the back is a lovely courtyard for al fresco drinks in the summer.

The Sunday lunch menu was simple – 3 choices for each course and it’s £10, £14 or £17 for 1,2 or 3 courses. We had booked ahead and had asked for a suitable table to park the baby at – I was glad we did as it was very busy!

For starters I had smoked salmon with rye bread which was really rustic and simple. Tom had Gressingham duck pate which was ‘light as a mousse’.

We both then opted for roast beef, which comes thickly sliced and cooked (refreshingly!) medium rare. The roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds, creamy leeks & cabbage were all delightful. Even the gravy was tasty – all of the common pitfalls of mass cooking roast dinners were impressively avoided! We really enjoyed it, even though we did have to do a bit of shift eating to settle the baby!

Even though we were quite full it felt rude to turn down pudding – so we shared the chocolate brownie with caramel ice cream. It was yummy too, and disappeared before I could finish Reading the culture section of the paper!

Overall it combines atmosphere with quality and friendly service. And with a bill of £40 for 3 courses it’s definitely an affordable treat.
