TLLH Day 4

Today’s activities have been mostly food related! After a few busy days we’ve been quite lazy (and greedy!) today.

Beigels baby!

After a morning coffee with A & J we set off in search of the best bagels in London, it’s a bold claim! And they are open 24 hours! It’s Beigel Bake on Brick lane, and we can vouch for the salt beef and the salmon & cream cheese. Chewy and savoury, Yum!

Space for a pastry?

Who can say no to a Patisserie Valerie? A good strong capuccino and a delicate strawberry tart mid-afternoon was definitely in order. The branch in Spitalfields is good for a bit of people watching too :o )

Not so general knowledge…

We love a good pub quiz, but we need to improve our trivia! We decided to take on the challenge of the ‘Cuckfield’ in Wanstead. It’s a really nice pub and they do a mean fish finger sandwhich. Well, fish is brain food isn’t it?!

TLLH Day 3

Day 3 got off to a slow start with the luxury of a Monday morning lie in!

Music & Books

A bit of leisurely ‘leche-vitrines’ on Denmark street was the first port of call. All the shops are specialist music emporia from guitars to saxophones and sheet music. Lots of drooling over vintage guitars…. If we had a spare couple of grand…
Onwards to Foyles bookstore, independent and well stocked. It was impossible to resist some of the ‘staff picks’ in the fiction section because they seemed so unusual and interesting. Had fantastic lunch in their cafe (Ray’s Jazz) before stocking up on some fab blues CDs from their dedicated jazz & blues department! Very pleased!

Time for a matinee

A luxury of being off work on a weekday really is being able to go to an afternoon film. Especially if you can go to a beautiful art house cinema like the Curzon Mayfair. (Like a cinema from an Agatha Christie novel.) We saw ‘Away we go’ (Sam Mendes) with a great cast including Maggie Gyllenhall and Allison Janey. Moving story, beautifully filmed and with a great soundtrack. A good all rounder.

Thai @ the pub

After a sunset stroll through Hyde Park, we met up with Tom’s dad in Kensington for a Thai. The Churchill Arms is a proper pub, festooned in flowers on the outside, stuffed with pub trinkets inside. But, with the strange addition of a Thai restaurant out the back. You can have a decent Pad Thai washed down by a pint of London Pride. It’s a popular place!

Back home now enjoying a bit of Wholefoods cinnamon muffin whilst listening to new Buddy Guy cd. Perfect.

TLLH The Comedy Store

It’s the end of day 2 and our sides are literally split. Every time we come to London we intend to go to the Comedy Store but this is the first time we’ve actually made it. It was soooo worth it!

It was basically 2 hours of 6 guys doing improv (including lots of songs!) on such deep topics as hang gliding ferrets and murder by carriage clock! Basically the stranger the suggestion from the audience, the funnier the sketch (and there were some strange people in the audience!) Tonight’s line up included Paul Merton and Richard Vranch, who were my particular favourites.

It’s worth a note that doors open at 6.30 for the 8pm show. Not only is it worth getting there early for a good heckling seat but the bar food is pretty good (can highly recommend the chocolate brownie!) and with happy hour drinks prices it’s loads cheaper than drinking in Leicester Square!

TLLH Day 2

What a great day! I’m usually not a great fan of Sundays but London on a Sunday has so many things going on. We decided to get up early and make the most of it, so here’s what we’ve been up to:

Brunch

An early start is essential at the Breakfast Club in Angel as within 1/2 hour of opening there wasn’t a spare seat! I’m not surprised because the food they were dishing out was fantastic – almost any type of breakfast item you could wish for. We had the ‘All American’ breakfast which came with the essential pancakes & maple syrup I’ve been craving. Washed down with a mango smoothie and a cup of Brew Ha Ha tea, even those eating for two were full and ready for a day of walking!

Sunday Up Market

For the wannabe hipster, the Sunday Up Market is the place to be and is full of hustle and bustle. There’s a whole collection of stalls offering printed t-shirts, handmade jewellery, music and specialist foods to name a few. There’s also loads of outdoor market stalls along Brick lane selling loads of second hand and vintage goods, as well as the nearby Spitalfields. It was a great atmosphere to wander the length of Brick lane and there was loads of other interesting stuff to see from the Indian shops & restaurants to some really elaborate grafitti.

Columbia Road Flower Market

Imagine a whole road dedicated to flower stalls – the colours and the smells were amazing, not to mention some pretty impressive heckling and haggling going on! You could buy great quality flowers, which all seemed to be taller and prettier than you can normally buy – or if you were feeling strong, there were plenty of trees to choose from too! We settled on some giant sunflowers, which I proudly carried wrapped in a big brown paper bundle all the way back to Aldgate East tube station with many admiring glances!

Time for a rest now before the Comedy Store tonight………..

Tom & La’s Last Hurrah (TLLH)

Ok, T-10 weeks til baby and we’ve got a week’s annual leave. It’s our last holiday for just the 2 of us and we’re going to make the most of it!

Day 1
* We’ve hit London and checked into hotel Bob & Ben (it’s great to have such kind relatives!)
* Eli’s birthday celebrations! What a lovely evening spent on the roof terrace of a lovely art deco building. Lots of old and new friends enjoying a few drinks looking out across the beautiful London skyline. And Cate made birthday cupcakes (a good nod to national cupcake week!)

Now off to bed with a great itinerary planned for tomorrow! (Thanks to Sam for great suggestions!)
